The Intimidator! New in 2010 , Carowinds

Press Release:

“CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 26, 2009) — The skyline of Carowinds will drastically change for what will be a historic and record-breaking 2010 season, as the amusement park announces plans to debut the Intimidator™, the Southeast’s tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster, in the Spring of 2010. Topping the list as the largest single capital investment in Carowinds 37-year history, the Intimidator™ is named in honor of NASCAR®’s most beloved driver, Dale Earnhardt, “The Intimidator.”

This massive attraction will stand 232-feet (23-stories) tall at its highest peak and send guests plunging down a 211-foot first drop at a 74-degree angle, reaching speeds in excess of 75 miles per hour. The second (178-feet) and third (151-feet) hills are also taller than any roller coaster at Carowinds. With 5,316 feet of track the Intimidator™ will feature high speed twists and turns including seven steep drops – one for each of his NASCAR® championships — and an intense finish through a diving spiral. The ride experience will last more than three minutes, and replicate the speed and intensity of a fast-paced NASCAR® race.

“The Intimidator™ will dominate the skyline and strongly position Carowinds as the thrill capital of the Southeast — the statistics speak for themselves,” said Bart Kinzel, Carowinds’ vice president and general manager. “This unprecedented addition represents the sizable commitment of Cedar Fair Entertainment Company toward building and expanding the product offering at Carowinds and solidifying us as the premier regional amusement park.”

The trains on the Intimidator™ will feature unique, open-air stadium-style seating with a simple T-bar style restraint that extends from the floor between the rider’s feet with the bar resting across the rider’s lap. These ‘side-less’ trains take away a feeling of protection for the riders and allows them to experience an unobstructed view of all the thrills and excitement of this record-breaking roller coaster. The trains will also be fashioned to mirror Dale Earnhardt’s 1998 RCR No. 3 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“We’re excited to see this new roller coaster celebrate the speed, excitement and legendary career of Dale Earnhardt,” said Jeff Steiner, executive vice president and general manager of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. “There are millions of fans that still honor their racing hero and this is a very engaging and interactive way for them to connect with the spirit and passion of the Intimidator™.”

The 10-acre attraction will be located on the midway across from the entrance of Nighthawk and will race over the skyline of the Park from the north main entrance to the south entrance paralleling the guest parking lot. Featuring a bold red track and grey support structure, the Intimidator’s™ 232-foot lift will overshadow the Park’s skyline, dwarfing its neighboring roller coaster, Afterburn at 144-feet.

“The name Intimidator™ is significant of the most exciting, aggressive, and skilled driver to ever race on a NASCAR® track, Dale Earnhardt,” Kinzel said. “There is no better way to communicate the enormity of this ride than to give it a face that its riders can truly connect with. The Intimidator™ will include a heavily-themed midway, complete with a Victory Lane and a video tribute to Dale Earnhardt’s racing accomplishments.”

Guests will have the opportunity to see this historic ride being built from the ground up as they attend on operating days throughout the Fall. Those who cannot wait until 2010 may take a virtual ride on the Intimidator™, access exclusive updates, features, virtual renderings, ride statistics, and more at intimidator.carowinds.com.

Construction has already begun on this world-class roller coaster and will continue throughout the winter months. The Intimidator™ is expected to open to the public in the Spring of 2010.

The Intimidator™ is designed and manufactured by Bolliger and Mabillard of Monthey, Switzerland, a recognized industry leader in roller coaster development and the same firm that brought Afterburn to Carowinds in 1999 and Vortex in 1992.

Carowinds is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly traded partnership that is listed for trading on The New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “FUN.” In addition to Carowinds, Cedar Fair owns and operates ten other amusement parks, six water parks, one indoor water park resort, and five hotels. Cedar Fair also operates the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy, CA under a management contract. ”

misc_TheRide_8

As you can see , the supports on the lift aren’t very big. I am guess this is because of intamin’s new style track. It will be one of the tallest and fastest , full circuit rides in the world. There really isn’t much more information to be revealed. Supports have been placed down and construction is now of the web site! For more on this brand new coaster , check out http://www.intimidator305.com/ !

Kings Island: SOB Sign Removal.

Kings Island Logo-Current

|8|17|09 | – Son of Beasts sign has been removed. Is this the sign that the park maybe getting rid of the coaster because of a possible law suit? Old news- a woman claims that see got injured last season on the ride. She said that she has been experiencing back problems ever since here ride in the 2008 season , and now comes forth with it. Many people wish for the ride to go due to the “roughness” of the ride , but other want it to stay. Unfortunately , the ride is more than likely leaving the park. The sigh has been removed over the weekend. The ride has been closed after the lady came out with her “injuries”.

2009_0817_SOB_SignRemoved

Now that the sign is gone , we can all say that the ride will likely be leaving us. The only thing possible could be a new logo , or a facelift of the ride. That is doubtfull because it is pretty much said that the lady will sue Kings Island for her “injuries” . I am not confirming that she has or is going to sue King Island , but she probably threatened to sue the park if they did not remove the park.

Thank you for reading.

Carowinds Construction Update.

I went to the park the other day to ride some rides and have fun like everyone does , but I also went to grab some photos of some track. For you that do not know, Carowinds is getting a brand new coaster said to be record breaking and history making. Even though no one knows what records it will break and what park of history it will make , from the track pieces and construction site , this ride looks fun all ready. Counted as of 8-14-09 , there is a total of 17 pieces of track. More track is expected to arrive in the next couple of days. The announcement will be at Carowinds.com on the 26Th . The time of the announcement is unknown .

Carowinds Construction 015

When we went on thunder road , something caught my eye , and I decided to grab my camera and take a few pictures. I would like to give attention to the two pieces in the middle of the photo. If you notice. Both pieces have low support connectors. It looks like it is for the drop . More than likely the first drop and the other is the second. From these two pieces of track , you can almost tell that it is going to be a hyper. Even though I am still not confirming anything , I am putting everything at being a hyper.

Here are a few more picture taken of the track. Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed my impute!

Carowinds: Coasterstock 2009 Review

Let me start off by saying that Coasterstock was a great event and well done job by Dani , and the rest of the “gang”. Arriving at the park 2 hours before anyone and staying two hours after everyone was great . Even though you spend the whole day a Carowinds at this event , they give you plenty to do . From ERTs to a shoot out , Costerstock was packed wit great events including a FAQ event after lunch. Here , many people asked about the new construction , which I’ll talk about later on in the post. They also had park Jeopardy! with prizes at the end of the day. At night(10:00pm-12:00am) they has Hurler , Drop tower , then Afterburn , and Thunder Road ERTs .

When you first arrived you got a few surprises! When you came up to the sign up booth , they gave you a free Carolina Cobra pin and a free on-ride photo for the ride. We had to wait a while after signing in to get into the park , but after we got it , it was amazing to see how empty the park is!(Of course it being closed..) It was pretty cool to see the park empty. The first thing we did was an official brought us over to the ERT area were we would first ride Carolina Cobra and Gold Rusher. It was a pretty odd combination… In my opinion , they should of had ricochet running too . Okay , here is the downfall to all of this. When we got done riding Gold Rush , Carolina Cobra broke down. so the only ride was Gold rusher. This is why I think they should have at least 3 ERTs for the even in one hour. We ended up finding ourselfs walking or sitting in the park during most of these ERTs.

When Carolina cobra broke down , they decided to open Nighthawk early. It was a good thing they did! We only rode that once because Dani decided to go open the Flyers. When we arrived , we had this funny guy named Anthony running the ride. He was very fun and added more to the ride! Good work Anthony! The Flyers is a good all around ride , but I could of lived without the theme of it. Another thing that bothers me about this hour? Only two rides running again and they were Nighthawk and Flyers! I wasn’t so sure about this one guys . I think it was a bad move to have JUST Nighthawk and Flyers up at the same time. Even though Flyers give you the feeling and the experience of a small roller coaster , it just didn’t fit the shoes of the second ERT of the hours which brings me back to 3 or more ERTs. This is were there should of been more ERTS than two in an hour. Flt rides often accrue to get boring to people. With one ride out of the scene , now all you have is Nighthawk. Nighthawk was a really big thing when It came out. Now that more parks have the same designs , it kinda makes it un-unique and bringing the same only stuff at you again and again. So now you have zero ERTS if you are bored with the rides, but luckily , Park Jeopardy! was up!

Before I start on Jeopardy! I need to say something. The only way I think Carowinds couldn’t have more have one more ERT per hour is the employees. I’m not sure that all of them (As for the roller coasters) would come in and work or could. I’m not going to say that I demand it , I just think there should be. Why? Well , it can be a little dry when you do not want to ride a ERT . There were plenty of rides that could of been running such as Vortex and Cyclone. Now , on to Jeopardy! ! The park Jeopardy , round one was pretty entertaining. Being in it myself , I was quite nervous , I must admit , but I did learn a lot about the park’s history! Some of the people’s names were quite weird! Some of the questions were hard and easy. You had to get lucky if you didn’t know them. Next year ,I think I migh just sit out!

Next up on the list , we have the Scooby Doo Shoot out! This was pretty fun. If first discovered that I suck at the game and everyone in my group need to practice. Luckily , the lady keeping score didn’t get there til’ the second game. This game we actually got good scores! We made the top 10! But you know what makes me laugh? Someone got something 28,000 points! One person! Man, they are crazy! Our highest score in our group was 1896. This was a good event and I hope the have it next year as well.

After the Scooby Doo Haunted Mansion Shoot out was done ,it was time for lunch and a good ol’ FAQ session with the pros. The meal was very affordable and tasted Delicious! They had out ribs , hot dogs , BBQ and more! On top of that , the drinks were free! Even though he had to wait a while before the FAQ session , we got plenty of time to look around in the pavilion! One thing that caught most people’s eyes before they even got their meals was this:

Record breaking history eh? Maybe , maybe not. No one knows for sure what this coaster maybe , but we are pretty sure it is a coaster. They gave out nothing at the FAQ other than the fact that it was going to be big. Many of the questions released were about the same exact stuff like : What type of ride will this new coaster be” or ” Will the trains be staggered or four across?” . As usual , these were not answered. One that caught me the most was someone ask ” Did Carowinds leak the White Lightning logo?” Dani came put right after she read this and said “Hmm… I’ve heard of that.” Interesting…

After the FAQ session was over, we left the park. There was a long break of about 3 and a half hours to spend your time at the park. This is a very good thing for people visiting the park and a smart idea by the event staff Why? Simple. Because they want them to ride what ever they want and come back to the park! When we came back , we got the Behind The Scenes Tour behind Cyclone. This was very cool , I must admit and the guy touring us was very open about what everything was. Inside the buildings , there was paint shops , wood shops , prop storage , and more. I really liked the first building my self because it was the storage room were the trains would be stored over the winter and refurbished. This was a cool event and I do hope to see it at another side of the park next year.

After this , we went around a rode more rides before the Coaster Stock Awards Ceremony. This event was for the Jeopardy! winners , Scooby Doo Shoot Out winners and additional prizes. The additional prize questions were pretty easy  and hard t the same time. The prizes they gave out were pretty neat and weird at the same time . They gave out retired coaster parts and t-shirts! My favorite park about this was the questions. Even though I sat out and ate my dinner for most of it , I still learned a lot about the park’s history!

Now that the park was closed , we got to go to the next ERTs Hurler and Drop Zo… Tower . The first many went to ride was Hurler. Unfortunately , I was in the front of the pack and was the many few to get the first ride on the Back Stabber .. I mean hurler. At first , I remembered how smooth it was when I first rode it in the beginning of the year. At Coaster stock , my mind was completely changed. This ride hurt terribly. It felt like I has getting thrown off a cliff inside a cardboard box with a knife in my back. It hurt so bad that I would really never ride it again , but stupid me , I went on it again in 30 minutes. It was worse and hurt even more. So we decided to ride Drop Tower. It was pretty fun and it provided a great view at night. After sitting down for another 30 minutes waiting for the next tow ERTs up , they did.

Afterburn and Thunder road. My two favorite rides in the park. This was amazing. the first we rode was Top I mean Afterburn. This ride is amazing at night! Amazing! you can see much at first and then your thrown into complete darkness then soar out of the tunnel and into the half loop next to go into the next tunnel. Afterburn was perfect to put at the last event. But Thunder Road was a better idea. This ride is the perfect night ride. I went o this at least 12 times and enjoyed it the whole time. this ride is amazing. If you ever go on this at night , take the front. Even if you do not get as much air time , you get an amazing view and basically get on the rails. It is a pretty amazing experience. After riding Thunder Road 20 times , we decided to go. The only down fall to this event is… Your Tired!!!

Over I would give CoasterStock a 8.5 out of 20 stars. The staff were incredibly nice , and they cared. They knew what they were doing and put on a great , amazing event. Let me say this , if you are thinking about ging to Coaster Stock next year , you should go.
